This is arguably the most important section in the entire guide. Everything else — your bank account, your apartment, your job prospects, your social life — depends on one thing: maintaining legal F-1 status. Lose it, and none of the rest matters.

The good news is that most visa violations are accidental, not intentional. Students drop a class without realizing it puts them below full-time, or they accept a freelance gig without knowing it counts as unauthorized work. The rules aren't complicated — but you have to know them before you make a decision, not after.

Before clicking "Drop": Calculate remaining credits. Below 12 (undergrad) or 8–9 (grad)? Stop. See your DSO. Without pre-approved RCL, your school must terminate SEVIS.

Reduced Course Load (RCL)

Sometimes life happens — you get sick, a class is harder than expected, or you're in your final semester with only a few credits left. The system accounts for this. There is a legal process to take fewer classes, but you must get approval before you drop below full-time, not after.

Need a new I-20 with RCL authorization before reducing load:

Address Changes & I-20 Management

Your obligations go beyond just staying enrolled. SEVP (Student and Exchange Visitor Program) requires you to keep your records current at all times. This means reporting any change of address to your DSO within 10 days — not when you get around to it.

The Rookit Recommends
  • Create a digital folder (Google Drive or iCloud) for all immigration documents. Scan every I-20, visa stamp, I-94, and correspondence with your DSO.
  • Set a calendar reminder 6 months before your program end date to start the extension process.
  • Never travel internationally without checking with your DSO first. You need a valid travel signature on your I-20.
FINAL ADVICE: Off-campus work (including freelancing or remote work for home-country companies) without USCIS authorization = permanent U.S. ban. See our on-campus employment guide and CPT vs OPT guide for legal work options.
